New York Trout Season Opening Day - April 1, 2011

Driving through a white out of a snow storm on April 1, towards Roscoe (Trout Town USA), was not necessarily my vision of trout season opening day after a very long winter.  We left early to beat the expected breakfast crowd at the famous Roscoe Diner.  After having a good breakfast and driving the short distance to the Junction Pool, we were awarded with a close parking spot and another nice surprise, a cup of coffee from the local Roscoe Welcome Group.  After exchanging some words with the other diehards we made our way down to the cold water as the snow swirled around us.  It was definitely a day for the spinner fishermen over the fly fishermen, as all the fish I saw caught between the pool and the upper Willowemoc, were not caught on fly lines.  (I should have put more weight on those nymphs).     On the ride home I focused on the fact that it was the tradition that counted and tried to remove the regrets of leaving my spinning rod at home. I guess trout celebrate April Fools Day too.…..but it is Spring, and those hatches are coming soon, and I cannot wait........

Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show, Harrisburg, PA  – February 5, 2011

I must admit that it has been a long winter. We have surpassed 50 inches of snow and set a record for January snowfall.  So when I looked at the calendar and saw that it was time for the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show, I knew that Spring was near!  I immediately started making plans to make the 200+ mile trip.   Last year had been my first year attending the show, and I must say that it was the most expansive show that I had ever been to.  It took up an entire armory!   I recall last year the guy who wanted to show how tough he was by taking a tazer from one of the vendors and using it on himself.  And how we walked about wiping the tears from our eyes, as he was slowly being helped back to his feet, looking like he had no idea where he was or what day it was.

It was the opening day of the show and the weather had been lousy the entire drive.  The highway was closed for a long stretch and we had to ride in bumper to bumper traffic for miles.  As we pulled into the parking lot, I asked the attendant about the turnout.  He just looked at me and said "this is an outdoor expo, do you think weather is going to stop them?" (duh!)

We went inside and there were hundreds of vendors and  thousands of attendees moving back and forth.  Wall to wall, floor to floor. There was the Fish and Boat Hall, General Merchandise Out Post, New Archery and Hunting Haven,  3D Archery Hall, Travel and Tourism, Guides and Outfitters, Wild, Wild West Hall, Game Calls and tons of other exhibits.  Men, women, children, dogs, and more.

Meet Captain CJ Crisp who operates a charter fishing business out on Lake Ontario.  After 10 minutes of speaking with CJ, you start thinking about how soon you can book a trip with him. We will add him to our 2011 Clique Destinations List.

We also ran into 2 guys at dinner that we had met earlier in the day at their booth; who offer fishing and lodging on the famous Santee Cooper Lakes in South Carolina.  We have fished Santee Cooper in the past, which is known for the record setting catfish, bass and pan fish. Another possible addition to the 2011 Clique Destinations List.

The 3D Archery Expo was truly impressive.  It was housed in a huge hall with targets placed throughout the stands. Each target was awarded a point value based on the distance it was from the shooting line.  The archers took the recording of points very seriously.

The sun was out on the entire drive home that matched the smiles on our faces. Spring is near.
